The Functions of a Public Space

I believe that a public space should firstly address the interests of the community surrounding it, for it is there to serve that community after all. It should not exclude, nor limit the amount of people using it. A good public space would be welcoming to all.

Some might argue that a public space being open to all would grant access to unwanted individuals as well (e.g. the case of drug dealers coming to Pershing Square). However, I feel that with proper security enforcement, this would not be a problem. Even the more harmless homeless people could enjoy the parks, as long as they do not deteriorate the enjoyment of the space by others. A good public space after all, should be one people can feel safe to be present in.
A good public space should also be one which promotes community building and cohesion among the residents around it. This would create a sense of identity, and make the public space one which all in the community feel a part of.

  1. How do you feel a public space could encompass not only bringing in others from a broader community and be open to everyone, but also establish a feeling of unity within the direct community? How does Santa Monica do this?

  2. Santa Monica creates a sense of community among its residents by having public places such as the Third Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Beach and Pier, where the locals can interact and enjoy the facilities with each other.
At the Third Street Promenade, there are street performers who require a number of volunteers to help with their show. Random strangers are called up, and made to help the performer.
At the Santa Monica Pier, when the line for the roller coaster ride is long, strangers are requested to share a cart. The water-gun game requires four or more people to play at a time, hence encouraging members of the community to play with each other.
All these activities encourage interaction among the locals and thus creates a sense of unity and belonging among the community.

  3. Should a public space have any historical or cultural significance?
